YL5 Week 10: Skin-Superificial

 YL5 Week 10: Skin-Superifical

Can't believe it's already been 10 weeks of medical school! I've been working on trying to get an appropriate balance for studying-relaxing. Seriously, I've been more on over-relaxing than over-studying. It's a veil of fallacy to think that since I'm passing anyway then I'm good. The real question should be am I learning

The question is apt for being in MSK, which is a month-long module where one thinks all there is to it is the upper extremity, lower extremity and vertebral column (back). But this month I realized we had a module on the skin. I was a bit confused until I realized MSK isn't just short for Musculoskeletal but the full name of the module is "Musculoskeletal and Integumentary System". Integument– skin. I looked at it superficially. Either way we started the week first with an exam on the back and vertebral column then had 2 days to prepare for a summative exam (no more formatives!) on derma and histology of the skin. After this, we got an orientation on what's going to happen next week– Face to face class. It'll be an entire week that begins with a team based learning module, continues with histology and for the rest of the time is anatomy– plastinated, dissection and anatomage.

Finally today, Saturday, began with a 30 minute mentoring session with our mentors. I began our schedule at 8:30 am. I had just come from mass and adoration. First Friday and First Saturday, what a blessing. Mentoring is great as we talked about short term and long term goals while getting to know each other a bit. My mentor, an OBGYN also indulged me with some interpretation of an ultrasound.

Derma perhaps was really one of the most well-received (but academically unrelated) synchronous sessions where people ask questions but about personal or hypothetical practice of dermatology. Histology as always was strange and hard to understand– it really takes a bit more effort to get through it. On an academic note, derma is quite interesting and amazing to see our professor do on the spot differential diagnoses that are more or less correct (if not, a couple of questions led to the correct answer).

On top of this we have to work out how to manage the MBA load throughout. Time management is key. For a motivation-driven person, I've thought to try next week to incorporate motivation in the sense of offering each study session. We'll see how well that goes. Until next week.
