YL5 week 9: Formative Formation
Formative Formation
If there's anything currently trending in our batch's mind it would be "formative quiz", which we took our last one yesterday. These are 10-20 point quizzes that are designed to help us with our studying. So we had daily quizzes since the start of MSK pretty much. Though know that ASMPH can be lenient when the whole batch asks for an extension. The big difficulty perhaps one would find in ASMPH's MSK module would be the spine– lots to know for one formative quiz (incidentally it was our very last one before we'd just get summatives: more on that next week). Nevertheless, all the more intriguing to learn.
For example, we had academic coaching last tuesday and so the formative quiz for that lecture was moved to wednesday. Two quizzes in a day, but honestly sometimes one just needs to take a little break and reflect with our mentors. I was one of the people who strongly disagreed with it since I wanted to get the quiz out of the way but ultimately it proved helpful.
Learning to balance one's time is key here and I'm impressed a lot of my batch has blazed through and loved every second of it. It's okay to take some time to adjust, as I realize, and if so, appreciation, admiration and inspiration could go a long way.
I spent more time writing independent essays this week as I had time to write about a little philosophy of medicine and a spiritual reflection on the holistic approach of ASMPH and medicine in general. This helped a bit as studying anatomy on its own, even with the clinical correlations, can seem like work if one's heart isn't in it. It could also be intimidating and overwhelming. One could succumb to thoughts like "well I'm just a YL5 student so it's not that important to have this down pat". The temptation is partly true but mostly false because there's no harm in trying your best at this point. One could learn alot about one's strengths and limits by putting an effort that is authentic (not necessarily 200% but one that is involved– qualified not quantified).
If anyone is wondering about extra curriculars there was a mental health session today promoted by the student wellness team. The event included 3 speakers but was a collaborative effort of national medical schools. On top of that, me and the campus ministry continued with our daily devotion for this month of october for the rosary at 8:30 pm. A tried tradition run by our liturgy head that I hope to continue when my turn comes around. Additionally, there are lots of people out there wanting to hang and game so don't be afraid to reach out or ask on the group.
One other thing to note is that our batch coordinated an "academic ease" schedule to allow November 2 (Tuesday) to be a holiday instead of a school day. This shifts our MSK module a bit and we werea ble to present inputs and vote on schedules. Though some disagreed in voting otherwise, adaptations are always made in cases of reasonable excuses. That's a strength of ASMPH– organizations and administration.
Next week, looking forward to continuing MSK and then moving directly into one of the hardest modules– Head and Neck. Until then, I'm going to enjoy this little break.
